Top 15 EV selling in Malaysia – Jan 2020 to Apr 2024

Let’s take a look at the top 15 electric vehicle (EV) models registered in Malaysia based on recent data provided by data.gov.my Vehicle Registration Transactions :

1. BYD Atto 3: Takes the top spot with 4,308 vehicles registered (22%).

2. Tesla Model 3: Follows closely with 2,740 units (14%).

3. BMW iX: Holds the third position with 2,543 units (13%).

Keep in mind that this data includes all vehicles registered with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) in Malaysia, including grey-imported EVs. If we focus on 2024 alone (from January to April), the Tesla Model Y emerges as the most popular EV in Malaysia, with 1,138 units registered. The BYD Atto 3 remains strong at the second spot with 1,118 units. Other notable models include the Tesla Model 3, BYD Seal, and the value-for-money BYD Dolphin priced from just RM100,000.

While all fully imported (CBU) EVs are currently exempted from import and excise duties until the end of 2025, the local automotive industry’s protection policy has limited the availability of imported EVs priced under RM100,000.
